The Museu do Bombeiro is a must-see venue, especially if you come along with your children. After all, who has never dreamed of being a fireman?
Located at the former Hospedaria Militar and the old Quartel dos Bombeiros, next to the Porta do Sol, this museum was inaugurated in 1994 and named after Manuel Valdez Sobral, in homage to this humanitarian association's volunteer between 1944 and 1981, who was a major supporter of the project.
Explore the three floors and find varied gears and equipments, donated by national and international brigades, as well as by private supporters. Learn about the inherent fraternity and dynamics of the Soldiers of Peace and admire ancient equipments that saved many lives. You’ll see manual fire pumps, hand-pump extinguishers, stretchers, axes, nozzles, hook ladders, lanterns, torches, extinguishers and many medals and badges. It's amazing how they could fight fires using such heavy gears! On the second floor, you’ll be surprised with the huge collection of helmets from around the whole world! Finally, the younger ones will be absolutely delighted with the emergency vehicles miniatures!
