Located in the historic centre of Monção, the Convento dos Capuchos is a Mannerism-based building probably constructed in the 17th century, now a luxury hotel. If you’re looking for a place to stay, take this ancient Franciscan convent into account.
Formerly known as Convento de Santo António, it was built around the cloister of an older convent - the Convento de São Francisco -, founded in 1563 by Franciscan nuns who abandoned it in the middle of the 18th century. When passing through the cloister, close your eyes and you’ll hear the chants and prayers that had echoed on these walls for many centuries.
After the extinction of the religious orders, the convent performed many public and private functions, such as a school, a court and a family residence. Nowadays, and after suffering major restoration works which have preserved its original architecture, the Convent awaits to offer you a pleasant and quiet stay.
