The Chapel of the Guardian Angel (Capela do Anjo da Guarda) of São Miguel, is located on the right bank of the river Lima, close to the Roman bridge of Ponte de Lima. Classified as a national monument, there is no certainty as to the precise date of its construction however it is estimated to have been built in the late 13th century or early 14th century. You are looking at one of the few religious Gothic buildings of Alto Minho! This is one of many chapels built in the Middle Ages, in the riverfront areas, river crossing points, where folk would pray in times of embarking on a journey that the voyage would go well and where thanks would be given when arriving safely from such journeys.
