The Vila Praia de Âncora beach is a cosmopolitan beach, with all of the comforts for spending an excellent holiday on the Atlantic shore. In summer, the beach provides the best conditions for days of family fun because of the children’s bathing area. It should also be emphasised that this is a beach with easy access for people with reduced mobility. The excellent quality of the wonderful variety of food on offer in the restaurants located next to the shore, which present diners with delicious menus, is due to the proximity of the small port of Vila Praia de Âncora. The best is to stay and watch the work: fishermen preparing and repairing fishing tackle or coming back from the sea full of fresh fish. Lagarteira Fortress is also near the small port, a national monument standing on a rocky massif. In seventeenth century military architecture, Lagarteira Fortress was built during the War of Restoration by D. Pedro II, for strengthening the Portuguese coast against the Spanish threat. The fortification is the sheltered port for the beach and is inseparable from the landscape. Opposite this historical monument, next to the tourist office, a pedestrian bridge crosses the mouth of the Âncora River. Enjoy the fauna here and stroll along the long wooden walkway, which crosses the dunes towards Gelfa forest. Whether you want to enjoy the bathing season, do sports or go on a romantic walk, Vila Praia de Âncora is always worth visiting!
