Cultural interchange and trading between Valença and Spain has always been favored by geographical proximity. Best known as Ponte Internacional, it was inaugurated in 1886 as the result of an agreement between the Portuguese and Spanish governments in 1879. The project was designed by the Spanish engineer Pelaio Mancebo. This was the place where many stories of smuggling of people and goods took place. An immaterial heritage transmitted from generation to generation of families that will endure through time… Above all, the bridge has the important role of connecting border peoples who, before its construction, were “so close but so far”…
