In the interior of Viana do Castelo Municipality, resting against the Arga mountains, São Lourenço da Montaria Parish preserves the old ways and memories of yester years. These ways are preserved in the Museum Centre, where there are 14 waterwheels, symbols of the community effort of bygone times. To visit these, we suggest making a reservation through the Museu do Traje (Costume Museum). The owners of the mills will guide you along the various hiking routes marked out. Notice the bellows, a common part of daily rural life. It is made from the goat skin which was used as a container for transporting cereals. Learn about the heritage and traditions of our ancestors and let yourself be lulled by the rural environment of this parish, where shepherding and traditional farming still remain. If you like the outdoors, there are trails with varying degrees of difficulty, depending on the time available and your physical ability. You can walk through the interior of the village or take a longer route, climbing up to the monastery of Sâo João d’Arga. Or even further, to Senhora do Minho, a climb of around 600 metres. At the end of your visit, take some time to rest and enjoy the typical corn bread baked in the wood oven!
