Igreja e Convento de Nossa Senhora do Mosteiró

Religious Heritage

Valença’s religious and patrimonial heritage is vast and relevant, offering several visit options to tourists. Among this heritage, we highlight the stately Convento de Nossa Senhora do Mosteiró, a Capuchin Franciscan temple of medieval construction, which includes a 14th century church. As fine examples of religious, Baroque and Neoclassic architecture in the region, both buildings deserve an attentive look. Built in 1392, it stood out as the first convent of the Regra de Santo António dos Capuchos in the country. Wandering through its cloister, it seems that you almost can hear the distant mumbling monks, praying in their retirement... Unfortunately, there's nothing left from the original construction, since it was completely refurbished in the 17th and 18th centuries. Pay special attention to the church interior, with its Joannine and Neoclassic golden carved panels and retables. The ensemble’s stateliness, along with the fact that it’s surrounded by vegetation, creates a mystical environment that invites for a walk.
