Castles and Fortresses

Praça da República is the visiting room of Viana do Castelo City and has been its main civic centre since the 16th century. It is dominated by a beautiful 16th-century granite fountain, which for centuries supplied drinking water to the people of Viana. On circular steps, the fountain is formed by a bowl from which emerges the column with a bronze armillary sphere. The old Municipal Council building ennobles Praça da República. The construction of this building, which is distinguished by three ogival arches, began in the early 16th century. However, it was only completed in the reign of Dom João III. Over the three large windows, there is a royal shield, an armillary sphere and a sailboat, the heraldic symbol of Viana do Castelo. The Misericórdia building, also known as the house of balconies, dates from 1589. The façade, facing the square is a unique example of Renaissance and Mannerist-inspired architecture, with Italian and Flemish influences. The baroque style church was built in the 18th century. The interior is decorated with national style carvings and has frescoes in the ceiling. For a beautiful finish, relax on the terraces in the square and taste the typical Viana doce de ovos while observing this rich architecture.
