At the Nossa Senhora da Peneda shrine, the worldly and the divine are harmoniously in tune. Sheltered in a deep valley, in the shade of century-old trees and a large rocky massif, it is in perfect balance with nature. This magical, pure and spiritual space receives thousands and thousands of pilgrims each year, who come here in search of inner peace. The shrine was built between the end of the 18th and the 19th century. As you go up the steps toward the church, you will see four elegant statues. They represent Faith, Hope, Charity and Glory. At the door, you can see the typical image of the shrine: the staircase of virtues! Step by step, on the landings there are small chapels which show scenes from the life of Christ. Before coming down the last steps of the staircase, there is a circular area with a pillar in the centre presented by the queen, Dona Maria I. If you visit Peneda, try staying near the shrine and enjoy all the natural surroundings. There are many walking trails or extreme activities to release emotions. You will certainly be enchanted by the always warm hospitality of the people of Alto Minho.
