Praia e Forte do Cão

Gelfa beach has recently been improved with new facilities throughout the surrounding area. It now has a parking area with 120 spaces, paved accesses and wooden walkways that provide great racing or pleasant walks. Cão Fortress, right by the beach, was built during the War of Restoration, to help protect the Portuguese Coast from the threat of the Spanish armada, as well as to cope with the incursions of pirates. It is a small fortress, corresponding in every detail to seventeenth century military engineering practices. Facing the sea, it has a privileged view of Gelfa beach, surrounded by Gelfa National Forest. You can also enjoy the dunes on the beach, criss-crossed by wooden walkways, relaxing to the beat of the ocean waves. The beach is especially popular in summer, it is ideal for hiking and sports such as surfing, bodyboarding, windsurf and kite surfing all year round.
