Among the most relevant religious heritage of the municipality, we highlight Igreja de Longos Vales - also known as Igreja de São João Baptista -, a temple which belonged to a Cónegos Regrantes de Santo Agostinho ancient monastery, founded by Dom Afonso Henriques in 1197. Later on, in the 17th century, it was rebuilt and the only remainder of the original structure is the apse. Besides, this chapel is the one that deserves more attention as it is the only element of the building considered as a National Monument. Next to the church, there’s the building of the ancient monastery, which suffered great changes due to the construction of a house in the 19th century, already ruined.
On the outside, wander through the churchyard and notice some anthropomorphic tombs excavated on the rock, discovered in 1998. Nearby, some espigueiros (raccards) are also worth noticing.
Don’t miss this meaningful building, especially the apse which is considered an excellent example of the Romanic style.
