Igreja da Misericórdia de Monção

Religious Heritage

The Praça Deu-la-Deu Martins, one of the town’s most important gathering sites, is surrounded by buildings of great architectural and historical value. One if them is the Igreja da Misericórdia, a temple built during the transition from Mannerism to Baroque. Its construction began at the end of the 17th century, having suffered several changes through the 18th and 19th centuries - which explains the presence of different architectural styles as Mannerism, Baroque and Neoclassic. Have a seat on one of the benches of its nice bloomy churchyard and admire the interesting round arch and the niche that houses the image of Nossa Senhora da Misericórdia. Then, go inside the church and notice the ceiling with painted and ornamented baroque cavities, the choir above a shattered arch, the pulpit on the left side of the altar and the National Baroque main retable. At the end of your visit, relax and take a break at one of the many esplanades around the square.
